We had a bug where a base stayed locked to a player after they left the match. Once that happened nobody could claim it, and after a few people came and went the island stopped working properly. That one was on us and it should not have made it out.
It is fixed. A base is released the moment its owner leaves, and the game now re-checks every base whenever someone joins, so a single missed step can never lock one again.
Sorry to everyone who lost time to it during launch week. We know that is a rough first impression and we are not brushing past it.
